Why Compost?

Organic waste accounts for approximately 30% of household trash in Connecticut. By composting this waste, community members generate a valuable soil amendment for lawns and gardens and reduce overall trash tonnage, increase the recycling rate, and reduce methane and greenhouse gas emissions. This program is designed to provide a convenient opportunity for residents to start backyard composting and to learn about the benefits of using compost to improve and maintain high quality soil. Nearly 1,000 composters have already been sold in nearby Middletown, diverting thousands of pounds of organic waste each year, and we can do that too! So let's make compost happen!

West Hartford is a bronze certified community through the Sustainable CT program, and is actively working towards achieving a 60% recycling and waste diversion goal by 2024 in line with the Connecticut DEEP goals. Backyard Composting recycles organic waste into a usable product directly in the composter’s backyard! By adding compost to your gardens and lawns, you can conserve water, grow healthy plants, reduce the use of fertilizer and pesticides, and protect the environment. “Composting will save residents money while substantially reducing landfill waste, enriching the soil, holding soil moisture (which reduces water use by 25-30%!) It also helps prevent erosion, suppresses weed growth, reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, and offers a variety of other benefits. Healthy soils grow healthy food and plants!”

John Q. Gale Hartford City Council

"Crisis is the driver. I don't use the "C" word lightly but we truly are in a crisis"

DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes

(Referring to CT's Waste Disposal Problems...)

“Join me in helping West Hartford meet its waste reduction goals. Composting produces nutrient rich soil, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reduces the amount of garbage thrown away every week!”

Mayor Shari Cantor, West Hartford

“The World Resources Institute has said if food waste was a country it would be the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter behind China and the U.S. Food waste is a major climate change contributor.”

CT Mirror, Jan 11, 2021

"Composting is an ancient agricultural practice that enables us to return to the earth the energy that plants create through photosynthesis and the nutrients they absorb from the soil.”

Krishna Winston Chair, Middletown Resource Recycling Advisory Commission

“Why waste the energy it takes to haul kitchen scraps to trash where food waste emits methane gas, when you can simply put in your backyard compost? Makes great and healthy soil too! A win-win”

Katherine Bruns –West Hartford Recycling Coordinator

Why use a Rain Barrel?

There are several environmental benefits associated with rain barrels. Foremost, rain barrels reduce storm water runoff, this is water that does not soak in to the ground and can transport many pollutants to our local waterways. By using harvested rainwater for watering lawns, gardens, potted plants and for washing off patio furniture and tools, rain barrels conserve water. From a gardening perspective, the natural nutrients in rainwater make it far better than tap water, which has chlorine and fluoride in it.With a rain barrel, gardeners can minimize or eliminate their use of chemical fertilizers.
